Michael, an ex-cop who lost his wife and son feels he has nothing left to live for. Alone and despondent he plans to take his life, but seeks some human contact before doing so. Rachel, a Filipino immigrant, lives with her daughter and brother as she struggles to achieve the American dream. This dream is compromised when loan shark Kaplan comes seeking payment and threatening their lives. Rachel turns to prostitution to get the money owed and by doing so she meets Michael. After engaging in unsatisfying sex, Michael dismisses Rachel to be alone to commit suicide. Rachel realizes Michael's instability and sympathizes with his struggle while relating by revealing hers. Michael must now decide if he can help Rachel from becoming hopelessness like him.
